THE DAILY AI INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING
Briefing ID: 26-106
Status: Confidential
Hello, Fellow Human. Time to upgrade.
I attended a sales workshop where the facilitator told this story:
She was reviewing a client conversation where everything looked almost too good.
The customer was happy, adoption was strong, and renewal risk was low. In other words, exactly the kind of account every client manager wants.
And then she saw the next line that the salesperson presented to the client:
“We also have a premium package I’d love to tell you about.”
Her face suddenly scrunched up and she literally said, “Ewwwww!” in front of us! 😕
After some laughter, she went on to say that nothing was technically wrong with the offer. The problem was the sequence in which it was presented.
The rep had gone directly from “everything is working” to “would you like to buy more?” and that makes the customer feel less like a successful partner and more like an under-monetized asset.
She taught us that the better move is surprisingly simple: don't begin with the premium feature. Begin with the client's next ambition.
As I reflect on that learning moment, I realized that AI is especially useful here because it can help an account rep prepare several conversational paths before the meeting: questions to uncover emerging needs, signals that an expansion conversation is justified, natural transitions, and language that gives the customer room to say, “Not right now.” And the human still owns the judgment.
That's the 90/10 relationship I want: let AI do the work of preparing possibilities, while the account manager handles the human elements of timing, empathy, credibility, and trust.
Done well, cross-selling stops sounding like:
What else can we sell them?
And starts sounding like:
What might help them get more value from something they're already doing?
That is a much better conversation. And one that AI can help you have.
Let's go raise your AIQ.
