YOUR DAILY PROMPT

Briefing ID: 26-137

I've always found it interesting how quickly a business can tell you who its biggest customers are. Ask which customers are the most profitable, however, and the conversation tends to get a little quieter.

There's a good reason for that. Revenue is easy to see because it shows up on invoices, dashboards, and sales reports. The actual cost of serving a customer can be scattered across half a dozen departments, where nobody is looking at the full picture.

Consider a hypothetical customer who generates $250,000 in annual revenue. On paper, that's an account worth celebrating, and the sales team is understandably proud of it.

Now consider what happens behind the scenes.

This customer requests constant order changes, needs customized reports, negotiates expedited shipping, requires frequent technical support, and regularly pulls senior managers into meetings. They've also negotiated enough discounts to make their purchasing department look brilliant.

By the time everyone finishes serving them, that impressive $250,000 account might be generating considerably less profit than anyone realized. Depending on the actual costs, it could even be losing money.

Meanwhile, a smaller customer generating $80,000 annually might place predictable orders, pay on time, rarely need support, and produce a healthier contribution margin.

This is a terrific opportunity to put AI to work as a business analyst.

With a little structured data, you can ask AI to examine revenue alongside the direct and indirect costs associated with serving each account. You can also have it look for unusual patterns, identify missing information, and recommend practical ways to improve profitability.

You don't need an elaborate financial model to begin. A simple spreadsheet containing customer revenue, product costs, service hours, delivery expenses, and special accommodations can provide a useful starting point.

The interesting part comes when you ask AI to look beyond the obvious.

  • Which customers consume a disproportionate amount of your team's time?

  • Are certain service promises quietly eroding your margins?

  • Could a pricing adjustment, revised agreement, or different support arrangement turn an expensive account into a profitable one?

Today's Master Prompt will help you conduct a Customer Profitability Audit to identify those opportunities and recommend which relationships deserve a closer look.

You may discover that your next opportunity to improve the bottom line is already sitting in your customer database.
